Phuket's Ronins aim to topple Big Pagoda

FOOTBALL: Phuket FC kickstart their crazy week by hosting the “Big Pagoda” Nakhon Pathom United FC this Saturday (April 26) at Surakul Stadium in Phuket Town.

Only three days later, Phuket FC play TPL-side Police United in the Toyota League Cup Round of 32 on April 29, also at home, before going on the road to take on Nakhom Ratchasima on May 4.

Coach Stefano “Teco” Cugurra will have to plan his games well to prevent exhaustion and injuries.

The Ronins are undefeated at home this season, having won three games and tying only once at Surakul. While visitors Nakhon Pathom (12th in the league) haven’t won any away games, they have only lost once and tied three times. Still, the Big Pagoda have not won in their last seven games.

The Big Pagoda are under tremendous pressure due to their winless streak, and are hoping to at least take one point home. But in last year's visit to Surakul Stadium, coach “Ling” Wimon Jankam and his team fell to a 2-0 defeat to Coach Teco’s side, who was coaching his first game for Phuket FC.

With their 4-4-2 formation packed for a tight defense in their own half, coach Ling trusts his Captain Pittayasit Tong-In (#36) and Tchangu Pierre Sylvain (#20) in defense, while former Phuket FC Captain Nonthapun Jiarasathawong (#7), and his left foot will be at left wingback.

Their strike force is mainly Korean: the trio of Cho Kwang Hoon (#13), Woogeun Jeong (#9) and Hwang Inseong (#16) are very strong and can easily bulldoze their way through defenders.

There’s still another trick up coach Ling’s sleeve as he's been superb with second half substitutions that score late in the game (most of Nakhon Pathom's goals were scored after the 65th minute).

On the home side, Teco will have to choose his midfielders carefully since he knows that Nakhon Pathom have a tendency to be very solid in midfield

He will have a big puzzle to crack because Eber Henrique (#23) has started for Phuket FC in every game and his bulldog style has started to take a toll on him.

That said, Anusak Laosangthai(#29) is in top form and is likely to join “Captain Boy” Wasan Natasan (#9) to spearhead Phuket’s attacks.

It will be interesting to see how Coach Teco uses his resources during these next three games. He’s likely to trust his 4-3-3 formation, running the play along the right sideline, mostly by Eber, and pressuring for goals early in the game.
