FOOTBALL: Controversy surrounded week nine in the English Premier League, including the highly anticipated match-up between the top two teams Chelsea and Manchester United that has led to yet another FA investigation into racial abuse.

Substitute Javier Hernandez’s 75th minute heroics gave the Red Devils a rare 3-2 victory over nine-man Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, where they have not won in 10 years.

Chelsea blew the game in the 63rd minute when Branislav Ivanovic was sent off after a tackle on Ashley Young, with Fernando Torres following him just minutes later – all with the game tied 2-2.

After the match, Chelsea defender and Nigerian international John Obi Mikel stormed into the referee’s room along with teammates to complain about alleged racially offensive language that official Mark Clattenberg had uttered during the game.

The FA are conducting a full investigation into the matter.

Manchester City kept pace with United thanks to a lone goal by Argentine forward Carlos Tevez against Swansea. City and Untied both are tied with 21 points.

Liverpool blew a 2-0 lead against Merseyside rival Everton and came away with a draw. Reds player Luis Suarez nearly finished off a hat trick in stoppage time, but it was disallowed because of offside.

Leapfrogging Everton on the table was Tottenham, who took over fourth place with a 2-1 away win against Southamption. Their new manager Andre Villas-Boas has them in top form, winning four of their last five, including their impressive 3-2 win at Old Trafford one month ago.

In The Phuket News tipping competition, ‘Ping’ ends up the winner in the October competition with 76 points, squeaking by with just one point over second place ‘Blackrosebar’. ‘Ping’ wins a B3,000 voucher to spend at Angus O’Tool’s in Karon.

The winners of November’s competition will win a B3,000 voucher to spend at Australian Bar & Grill in Kata. The overall winner at the end of the year will win a brand new Honda Scoopy courtesy of AP Honda.
