What do you get when you combine art and batik? Artik, of course!

OASIS ED PHUKET: Phuket is well known for its vibrant batik craft, with bright colours seen everywhere from the uniforms of government staff on a Friday, to flamboyant sarongs being sold on our streets. Most often the designs are centered around ocean scenes, teeming with bright fish and coral, on an equally bright background.

But about 4 years ago a new kid appeared on the block to take batik down a whole new path, one that dared to include obscure shapes, darker tones and deeper concepts. In this evolved; Artik.

And what an amazing fusion it is to behold. Inspired to explore the relationships of Universal Truth, Earth & Spirit, and Family, Khun Prasert Pensook of Artik’s artworks are a journey through outer space & inner-self, passing solar systems of creation, crossroads where worlds overlap, travelling beyond that which is seen and known.

After training and working in the traditional style of batik for over 10 years, Khun Prasert began to experiment and add his own personal concepts to the batik style. Taking the foundation techniques of batik, Khun Prasert stretched & pushed them in a direction that is now distinctly his own.

Based in Phang Nga Road, Phuket Town, Khun Prasert shares the Drawing Room Gallery with fellow artists Khun Isara and Khun Jek, where he both creates and displays his works for sale. If you time your visit right, you can even catch him in the creation process, applying either wax designs or colours. Each piece, often at least one metre square, takes him a number of weeks to complete, with the even larger ones taking months of development. In viewing his artworks, you’ll be astonished, and impressed, by the amount of details, layers and time that goes into each and every artwork he creates.

Although already stunning, his Batik artworks are given a greater depth of colour, light and life as Khun Prasert carefully displays them backlit with fluorescent lights. The artworks draw you in, to examine the finer details, to question “why & how?”, to stand back and take in the whole. As a very friendly and approachable person, with a laugh in his eyes, Khun Prasert will happily show you around the Drawing Room, discussing the “how’s and why’s” of his artworks.

Khun Prasert also plans to teach an Artik style Batik workshop in conjunction with Oasis ed. Phuket in May this year.
