Visit Phuket for sun, sea and surgery

PHUKET: The rise in medical tourism in Thailand, a country where prettiness and aesthetics sometimes seem prized above all else, has led to an increase in the use of detox centres, dermatological clinics and places where people can go for a quick nip, tuck, injection or face peel.

Looking to capitalise on Phuket’s unique position in being able to offer a winning combination of sun, sea and surgery, is the recent opening of the Momento Aesthetic Centre in Patong.

Situated in the new Banana Walk Beachfront Lifestyle Mall, which features numerous up-scale shopping and dining options, the centre’s prime location affords beautiful views. According to registered nurse and partner of Momento, Sutisa ‘Ya’ Sooksiri, the attractive location is key.

“It’s a great location with a great view. This is our new project and will be aimed at the tourist market – plastic surgery, face fillers, nose jobs, botox, laser treatment and breast augmentation.”

For Mrs Ya, Momento Aesthetic Centre is the second local clinic she is involved with. The other is in Phuket Town and called Phuket Detox.

The busy Mrs Ya is also a registered nurse who works full time, five days a week in the Emergency Room at Patong Hospital. There she works helping people who have had accidents and serious injuries, though at Momento she will be helping everybody “look younger and better.”

“We have a mixture of clients – young and old, men, women and ladyboys,” she says.

Although consultations and some minor facial operations, including facial fillers and botox injections will be performed at Momento, the majority of the work will be performed by Dr Santiphap ‘Santa’ Sae-Ung at Patong Hospital.

Mr Santa tells The Phuket News that he has wanted to give others the gift of youth and beauty ever since he finished his medical internship at Patong Hospital.

“I like to do plastic surgery because I like to combine art with medicine and science. I also like to do a job where I don’t have to rush.”

Much like Mrs Ya, Mr Santa believes that Momento’s strategic positioning, and breadth of options, will prove a big hit with tourists.

“We’re trying to get all the tourists to come here have a great holiday, enjoy the beach and then have some work done before they leave.”
