To feel at our peak physical best and radiate vibrant, inner health, we need to make sure that we are fueling our bodies with the most premium products available. The natural high is so addictive, and we want to share the new wave of superfoods and supplements that have caught attention in health forums in 2014. We dare you to try them and enter into wellbeing euphoria …

 TEMPEH

If you are familiar with Indonesian or Malay cuisine, you will know the familiar crunch of this fermented soy bean product. 2014 has been named the year of the gut … tempeh is a tasty addition to the probiotic infused family. Depression, diabetes, autoimmune diseases and obesity are only a few nasty side-effects of a neglected gut, and fermented foods go a long way in avoiding these. Used as a meat substitute or lightly fried in coconut oil for a naughty snack or salad accompaniment, we hope that this delicious fad is here to stay.
QUINOA
Full of protean, vitamin B6, and countless other essential vitamins and minerals, this fantastic grain replacement is one of the best alternatives to stogy, gluten laces staple foods to date. The combination of nutrients found in these pearls of goodness help to avoid cancer, promote healthy digestion and avoid migraines!

BELUGA LENTILS
The diabetic’s best friend, legumes have many incredible benefits in stabilizing blood sugar. They are a wonderful source of protein, low in fat and high in dietary fiber. If Beluga caviar is the piece de resistance of fish roe, then beluga lentils are their equivalent in seed pod family. The dusky colour offers numerous benefits because the colour pigment found in any darker-hued natural food sources are an incredible antioxidant. Credited with assisting blood circulation and protecting the fats needed in our brain cell membrane, as well as lowering cholesterol – which is great news for our cardiovascular health.

AVACADO OIL
Perfect for salad dressings, marinades and dips, this delectable oil is more than just a fashionable fat. Full of healthy monounsaturated fats, avocado oil lowers risk of heart disease by decreasing LDL cholesterol and increasing healthy HDL cholesterol. The delicious golden liquid also assists in stabilizing blood sugar, which is very helpful when trying to control weight and stop energy spikes and crashes during the day.

BLACK
SOYBEANS
Full of alpha linolenic acid (an omega-3 fatty acid), these reduce the risk of heart disease, and the risk of the blood clotting disorder thrombosis. Studies have also found them to have anti-obesity effects – so expect a wave of weight-loss advocates to start singing their praises soon.

BULLETPROOF COFFEE
Opinion is entirely divided when it comes to coffee. Those against it do not appreciate the instant cortisol release, increase in acid levels and potential for anxiety and increased heart rate. The other side, talk about it being the most tremendous source of antioxidants and a DNA strengthener which is fabulous for the skin. Bulletproof coffee has put caffeine consumption into a brand new dimension! A cup of black coffee with grass-fed butter and medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) oil mixed in, is the choice of caffeine supporters who want to “supercharge brain function and create effortless fat loss with no cravings.” Designed by Dave Asprey, owner of Bulletproof Executive, you can find out more at bulletproofexec.com

BEET JUICE
The most incredible detoxing solution, this dark purple ale is the most effective way to kill any hangover. It has been found to promote brain health, improve blood pressure and even give athletic performance a competitive edge! The dark purple root is full of betain, which cleans your blood and is a well-known liver purifier. Interesting fact? You can get an idea of how much acid is in your system by drinking beet juice! If your urine is clear after consumption, you need to up the ante! Pinkish urine means low stomach acid, and we all want to be more alkaline.

HEMP SEEDS
Unlike marijuana [the flowers from a cannabis plant], hemp seeds are legal in most places, and won’t have the same effect since there is no THC [the psychoactive compound in marijuana, see below] in the seeds, let alone in hemp plants.
However, we think that the natural high that the THC-free hemp seeds give you is incredible! With a flavour similar to pine nuts, they pack a serious protein punch: 1 tablespoon contains 4 grams of protein and 10 essential amino acids. Assisting with weight loss and metabolism, the seeds are also purported to contribute to good respiratory and cardiovascular health.

Note from the editor: THC (Tetrahydrocannibinol) is found in the trichomes of the flowers of cannabis plants, which were made illegal in Thailand, initially through US industry-lobbied propoganda and police prohibition since the mid-20th century. However, the compound has been the base of countless studies, including in the recent decade by Harvard and the National Cancer Institute, which demonstrated the compound’s properties as an active cancer inhibitor. Marijuana remains illegal in Thailand.
