Phuket News: Thailand ‘most likely’ terrorist target in Asia – FBI

BANGKOK: Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung said today (April 4) that he plans to set up an anti-terror centre, following a warning from the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) that Thailand is the most likely terrorist target in Asia and the fifth most likely in the world.

Mr Chalerm, who oversees national security, said the Immigration Bureau needs to implement tougher screening of foreign arrivals, because the country’s lax immigration policies and relative freedom have permitted regional terrorist movements to steadily build up influence in Thailand.

After a meeting with Tarit Pengdit, the Director of the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) Mr Chalerm said the new command centre will tackle violent crimes and international terrorism threats.

Mr Tarit yesterday met the legal attaché to the US embassy in Bangkok, Daniel P Powers, who passed on the FBI warning.

Mr Tarit said the FBI urged Thailand to take precautions because the country’s relative freedom compared with others in the region has made it a regional centre of terrorist movements.
