Tropico 5 is the fifth-installment in a simulator strategy series where gamers play as the leader of an island nation with the abiliity to enact and enforce policies as well as control the press and prevent uprisings.

The Film and Video Censorship office – under the Culture Ministry – blocked the game for fear that “some part of its content might affect peace and order in the country,” said Nonglak Sahavattanapong of New Era Thailand, the game's distributor within the Kingddom.

Representative of New Era have stated that they will not appeal the decision.

"We are disappointed to hear that Tropico 5 will not be released in Thailand,” said Simon Hellwig, Global Managing Director Kalypso Media Group – the game's global distributor. "Tropico 3 and 4 both enjoyed successful releases in the country and although the Tropico brand does have a realistic political element to it, the scenarios and content are all delivered with a certain trademark tongue in cheek humor."

Tropico 5 was released on May 23 for the PC, just one day after the military deposed the civilian government of Thailand, and broke franchise sales records.
