Uber aims to change all that.

The rideshare service has finally arrived to Phuket in what the company has dubbed #UberDESTINATION – the first in a series of roll-outs at exotic destinations and resort areas around the world.

Though the service is in a testing phase at the moment, with rides limited to the Patong Beach area, local Phuketians such as Thanyapura Executive Chairman and triathlete Chris McCormack as well as local champion surfer Annissa Flynn have already taken advantage of Uber.

The service works like this: users download the mobile phone application (available for both iOS and Android), register a free account with a valid credit card, and then request a ride by dropping the pin on a pick up location.

Users will be able to track their reserved vehicle’s location, source the background and reliability of drivers, and even choose the type of vehicle (limited for the time being).

Of course, the service does require a fee with all fares starting at B140 and going for B2.50 per minute plus B20 per kilometre (with a minimum fare/cancellation fee of B180).

To celebrate the company’s arrival to the island, Uber is giving away the first ride for free to new local users with the promo code UberOnPHUKET (valued up to B300) until November 1.
