Summit time: Phuket jazz scene gets kickin’

Musicians speak a different language and it involves sound, instruments and a lot of groove. As a travel destination, the island’s soundtrack spans across all genres – but jazz has been the soul of Phuket for several years.

That’s what the organisers of the 4th Phuket City Jazz Summit will promote as the annual event rolls around on Sunday, November 23, at Tablespoon Cafe in the courtyard of Central Festival. From 6pm to midnight, a bevy of jazz musicians from all corners of Phuket (and the globe) will be speaking in their musical language.

Organisers have also recruited help from Angsana Laguna Phuket and the Phuket Jazz Society with plans to make this year’s event the best yet.

The lineup of artists include Boy Navio (Thailand), Le Tab (Belgium), Jakub Augustyn (Poland), Tonet Lipana (Phillippines), Rolly Rodriguez, (Phillippines), Siobhan McGovern (Canada), Editha Ballesteros (Phillippines), Miss Tikky Kasemsri (Thailand), and many others.

The annual event started in 2010 with a tribute concert for noted Filipino pianist Romeo Navio following his tragic death. Navio, who played on the island for over a decade, performed in some of the most exclusive locales on the island. His son, popular jazz guitarist Boy Navio, organised the show at Karon Beach.

The following year, and with the help of Francisco Bona – General Manager of Spotlight Productions – the tribute show grew into a full scale concert acting as a focus for jazz music, helping to ring in the annual high season.

Jazz bands and musicians, both Thai and foreigners, will grace the stage as aficionados learn the language of jazz.
