Claire’s recent endeavour is beach club “Salt on Surin”, in conjunction with her Singapore-based business partner Alex Longman. The beach club was opened in December, situated at the south end of Surin Beach.
Claire moved to Phuket nine years ago and is also the owner of Pepper’s bar/restaurant in Cherng Talay. Later this year in September, she plans to open up an English fish ‘n chip shop, replacing her Irish bar The Craic. But for now, her focus is on developing the Salt on Surin venue, which already has a strong following and returning customers.
“I’ve always wanted a place on the beach,” she says, “and this is something very different from Pepper’s.”
Claire says the food is good quality and the restaurant has unobstructed views to the sea, and there’s also no tax or service charge.
Food-wise, the beach club offers a mixture of Western and Thai dishes, created by Chef Nattee, the restaurant’s head chef.
The recommended Thai dishes are the duck curry (B180) and the rather hard-to-find northern Thai dish khao soy (B200).
But being English and coming from an English pub background, Claire’s plan was always to offer a good selection of Western dishes too. And during lunchtime, for every paying adult, a child can eat free off the children’s menu.
Western dishes include the beef burger (B250), potato skins (B120 – baked potato with cheese, bacon, sour cream and chives), and the salmon fillet, served with either fries or vegetables (B550). There’s also salads (starting at B220), sandwiches (B120) and pizzas (B220).
The restaurant opens at 9am with a full breakfast menu, including a full English breakfast menu for B300. This includes two eggs, two servings of bacon, two sausages, two pieces of ham, a hash brown, fried tomatoes and baked beans.
As well as a great food and drinks menu, Salt on Surin also has beach club facilities available such as sun loungers, stand up paddle boards and kayaks available for rent, and during the high season, beach boys take bar and restaurant orders from down on the sand.
And if it rains? No problem – Salt on Surin has a large indoor bar area where you can easily escape the monsoon rains.
