Olga Smirnova was released on bail by the Phuket Provincial Court yesterday (Feb 21), confirmed Lt Sakkarin Sangjaroen of the Chalong Police.

“She didn’t have enough money to post bail, so we had to keep her at Chalong Police Station for two nights until we handed her to the Phuket Provincial Court on Feb 21,” he said.

A confused Ms Smirnova was taken into custody on Koh Racha Yai on Sunday (Feb 19) for the heinous act of feeding bread to fish close to a coral reef, then taken to Chalong Police Station to be charged. (See story here.)

Unable to post bail, she was incarcerated in the police cells at 7:30pm.

Ms Smirnova was presented to Phuket Provincial Court at 3pm yesterday, when Ms Ratree Raksaart, who nominated herself to the court as a “friend” of Ms Smirnova, arrived with Tourist Police and posted bail on the Russian woman’s behalf.

“Ms Smirnova is not permitted to leave the country while waiting for her trial to begin,” Lt Sakkarin said.

“She must report herself to the court on March 6,” he added.

Jor 12 charging a person 100k baht and 12 months jail time for feeding a piece of bread to a fish is ludicrous, if they were actually serious about "protecting the environment" they would start by charging the local garbage dumpers all over the island, this is a money grab, open your eyes and get some perspective.

Jor12 | 23 February 2017 - 11:03:01

Its diificult to reconcile comments here with previous reports of officials wanting to protect the environment. Then there were howls of protests that officials do nothing, yet like now when they do there are equal howls of protest. Make up your minds.

"heinous act of feeding bread to fish"

Yes its a mistake worthy of a fine but imprisonment and 100,000 baht bail is heinous.

Another example of the Thai's milking money from foreigners.

Would they lockup a Thai and ask for 100,000 baht for feeding bread to fish?

BenPendejo | 22 February 2017 - 21:29:40

This place is really starting to get sickening. I hope this debacle travels far and wide through Russia... let the Russian people know how this place treats visitors. Shameful and pathetic.

Government Agencies are able to arrest a tourist but are unable to arrest resort and restaurant owners for discharging wastewater in the klongs and public beaches.

Also, the guide, travel agent and boat operator should be hold responsible for not informing their customers about that it is illegal to feed fish in Thai sea.

By the way, spearfishermen, local fishermen fishing directly from the ...

Nope, TIT.

marcher | 22 February 2017 - 18:51:54

That's right. Get rid of all the Russians. After all what Russian in his right mind would come to a country which incarcerates people for feeding a piece of bread to the fish. Probably every tourist, and expat, has committed this heinous crime. I use bananas. Is that OK?

This must be a joke, right?
