Rhythm & Sands party returns to Koh Phangan

A new party has come to Koh Phangan. It’s called Rhythm & Sands, and it’s big, bold, and, based on people’s experience at their past parties, tons of fun.

With three different music areas playing genres to suit all tastes, including headlining DJs of international fame, a huge pool in the middle of the dancefloor, and an average of 600 people in attendance, it’s no wonder.

With their next event coming up on Wednesday (August 1), the organisers of Rhythm & Sands (R&S) are quite busy with preparation at Holiday Beach Resort, in Ban Tai, where it takes place. R&S is run by five westerners from England, Scotland, and Canada.

The general manager and organiser, Woody (originally from England), once worked with the Rhythm & Vines festivals in New Zealand. After running a bar in the popular Haad Rin area with his girlfriend, he had the idea to bring the event to the beaches of Thailand, and Rhythm & Sands was born.

Their first party surprised them - it was last December, and even with ticket prices at B1,200, 800 people turned up. Now, they’ve brought their ticket prices down to B500, and they’re expecting to at least match their December turn out.

Their selection of the Holiday Beach Resort for the venue was a strategic one - not only is the resort ideal for offering the intimate festival atmosphere they envisioned, but it can also hold up to 3,000 people, allowing R&S to grow.

They’ve managed to secure big name DJs including Micky Finn and Brandon Block, as well as nine others. The main stage will offer multiple genres and international acts.

Then, there’s the electronic lounge, playing liquid drum ‘n bass and techno on the beach. Finally, the JAM chill out park offers 12 hours of live music with local and international talent and genres of all sorts.

So how is this party different from the Full Moon? “The R&S event aim is to offer an additional alternative to the Koh Phangan party scene. The events offer an intimate festival atmosphere, with more focus on daytime music and activity,” says Woody.

“In this intimate venue we have multiple stages and music genres, high quality international DJ and live music line ups, Western standard food, drink, security and entertainment.”

They aren’t trying to compete with the Full Moon party, but they are making it easy to attend both parties, by scheduling their event every two months, two days prior to the Full Moon party.

All the Rhythm & Sands parties have dedicated security, proper toilet facilities, and a medical center.

After their August 1 party, the organisers will be looking to their next Rhythm & Sands event, which is set to take place at the end of October, just prior to the Full Moon.

Tickets are available at various venues on the island, including Lazy House Hostel, Outback Bar, John’s Bistro, Coco Garden, Sticky Rice & Icecream Bar & Restaurant, and Jamie’s Beer Garden.
