Rejuvinate with JW Marriott’s holistic wellness programme

JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa has gone to new levels with its new wellness programme, offering a relaxing, pampering retreat that is ideal for both guests and locals alike.

The meditation programme opens up the opportunity to free your mind from any worries and distractions and allow your body to truly unwind.

Meditation classes are led by professional instructors, such as healing energy guru, Nikorn Banjerdlert, and Pat Thummanond – “the only certified Cranio-Sacral Therapist available in Thailand”.

The classes focus on the brain and how the nervous system controls each movement in the body.
I attended the retreat one weekend and was, admittedly, slightly anxious since I had no idea what the classes would involve or what I would be expected to do.

But, I soon relaxed and fell into a calm state of mind. We began by laying down on the floor and were told to close our eyes and listen to the noises around us. Eyes closed, we had to rely on our other four senses. It suddenly became clear how important it was for us to pause, take a moment and just relax. So, I concentrated on the sound of the waves on Mai Khao Beach.

The instructors explained how meditation was a strong method to allow our bodies to switch off, slow down and take a break. They said it would help us ignore and avoid pain, observe with other senses and feel comfortable.

We were taught how to use the “Feldenkrais” method, which involved a slow moving meditation with the purpose of focusing on the brain first, rather than the muscles.

Mandy Kealy, a Feldenkrais practitioner said, “If in doubt, just ask yourself: ‘am I breathing?’ and then just let your body do its natural work. You’ll move more easily.

“Verbal workshops explore self-awareness, with the aim being how to expand your choices in how you respond in life. As Moshe Feldenkrais (1904-84) once said, if you know what you’re doing, you can do what you want,” she added.

Afterwards, we had lunch at the Ginja Taste Restaurant, where a selection of raw food was presented to us by the Raw Master Chef, Mukesh. The main ingredients were coconut and vegan protein, all providing healthy nutrients for the body.

To finish off the day, we headed for some R&R at The Mandara Spa, the final leg of the wellness programme.

Set in 27 acres of lush tropical gardens, with natural swimming pools, freshwater ponds and natural preserved coastal wetlands, the spa offered total seclusion and tranquillity overlooking the beautiful waters of the Andaman Sea.

It felt very serene and peaceful, and was the perfect environment for relaxing and unwinding.
