PHUKET: M &M’s pizza and pasta joint is so highly regarded that you’ll often have to wait to be seated.

The restaurant is run by quirky Italian couple Meghi and Mario Ferremi, who have lived in Phuket for 12 years, and was the first pizza place in Rawai.

Both Meghi and Mario are from the north of Italy and have been in the food business for most of their lives.

They ran a very successful restaurant for 14 years in Italy, and first came on holiday to Phuket in 1997. After they returned to Italy, a friend in Phuket suggested they form a partnership and open a restaurant in the Rawai and Naiharn area.

The Ferremis agreed and moved back here, and after three months took on sole ownership of the place. They have remained as owners ever since, turning the venue into an iconic restaurant.

They initially opened on Rawai Beach road, and spent nine and a half years there before moving to their current premises. Mario is the main chef, but has a strong Thai team. Indeed, many of the couple’s staff have been there for a long time, and one even speaks fluent Italian.

On the menu are a large range of wood-fired pizza and pasta dishes, including make your own pizza options which basically means the couple can make almost any topping combination you want – provided they have the ingredients.

Meghi, who runs the service team, says one of the most popular dishes is the mixed sauté seafood, which is mussels or clams in tomato sauce or white wine sauce, and chilli, for B220.

Seafood spaghetti is B300 and also popular, while the Napoli (tomato, mozzarella and anchovies) and Diavola pizzas (tomato, mozzarella, and hot salami) are Meghi’s pick.
A true connoisseur, she cringes as I insist on my pizza having parma ham, rocket, pineapple, cheese and tomato toppings, but in keeping with their ethos that the customer is always right, follows the order to the letter (it was delicious, by the way).

Desserts are between B130 and B150, with the recommended home-made panacotta just B130.

M&M’s Pizzeria and Spaghetteria, 98/16, Moo 1, Viset Road, Rawai. (Coming from Viset Road, turn into Sai Yuan. When you reach the end of Sai Yuan, turn left and keep going straight past Da Vinci restaurant. Follow the road right at the slight bend, and M&M’s is on the corner on the right. If you reach Los Amigos Mexican restaurant you’ve gone too far.) Tel: 081 569 0244. Email: mmfcossi@hotmail.com. Open 6pm to 12pm daily, closed Mondays.
