Ramadan set to start a day late, thanks to clouds across the South

PHUKET: Ramadan will begin in Thailand tomorrow (May 17) after heavy cloud cover across Southern Thailand thwarted efforts to confirm the lunar phase of a new moon in the South, the Chularatchamontri, formally known as the Sheikhul Islam Office for Thailand, has announced.

By the Islamic calendar, Ramadan was set to begin yesterday (May 15), but the tradition of confirming the new lunar month with the naked eye to mark the beginning of the Holy Month pushed back the fasting period by a day.

In anticipation of the Holy Month’s arrival, activities were held across Phuket yesterday with various agencies donating food and drink to mosques to support the breaking of fast communal dining events held after sunset each night.

One such donation activity was held by Phuket International Airport, led by Airport General Manager Petch Chancharoen and joined by airport staff, visiting local mosques to make donations.

Mr Petch pointed out the importance of the community around the airport and noted that the event demonstrated the commitment to society by Airports of Thailand (AoT), which operates the airport.

Further south in Srisoonthorn, Thalang, the Srisoonthorn Municipality donated rice and other foods to local mosques in support of Ramadan activities.

In Bangkok on Monday His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebayavarangkun and the Chularatchamontri, Sheikul Islam Aziz Phitakkumpon, officially opened the three-day annual Muslim Fair at the grounds of the National Mosque in Bangkok’s Nong Chok District.
