The cleanup, organised by the Phuket office of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MNRE) in conjunction with the Cherng Talay Tambon Administration Organisation (OrBorTor), began at 9am, explained Nanthanit Charoenthaisong, Environment Specialist at the Phuket MNRE office.

“About 200 people took part in the cleanup, including Phuket MNRE officials, Cherng Talay OrBorTor officers, Phuket airport staff, local residents and hotel staff,” Ms Nanthanit told The Phuket News today (Mar 21).

The cleanup was carried out under the “Protect Andaman” project, whereby the MNRE offices in each of five Andaman coast provinces – Phuket, Phang Nga, Ranong, Krabi and Trang – coordinate with local administrations to have 10 beach cleanups in each province.

“The Protect Andaman project in Phuket started in October 2018. So far we have already carried out eight beach cleanups at Mai Khao Beach, Nai Thon beach, Surin Beach, Kalim Beach, Thala beach in Pa Khlok, Sirapan Beach and Laem Nga Beach both at Koh Siray and Yanui Beach in the south of the island,” Ms Nanthanit explained.

The cleanup at Layan Beach yesterday was the ninth beach cleanup in Phuket under the campaign.

“After this, the Phuket MNRE office together with the Mai Khao OrBorTor hold a cleanup at at Sai Kaew Beach on Mar 29, starting at 9am,” Ms Nanthanit added.

“Anyone interested in joining us can call Mai Khao OrBorTor for details on 076-348201,” she said.

I'm sure most readers see right through this one-day-cleanup nonsense. The island is covered in trash from one end to the other. The Thai's don't give a rats ass about the environment. This is all just BS propaganda. Who would actually buy into this? Why Mr. J of course. The chief apologist, self appointed defender of Thainess.

"and when they do clean up, the clowns still complain," noone is "complaining" just stating a few "facts" something you're always short of, so you tend to name calling or twisting the facts.

And as always the keyboard warriors on here talk and talk but are not ready to get their own hands dirty .Useless bunch of cry babies.Only good for holding never ending speeches.I bet their home countries are happy they left.

"In Europe beaches daily cleaned"What a load of crap again.Just google about beach pollution in France,Italy,Spain or Greek. And you can find a map of beaches to avoid in Europe due to polluted water too. It's not only a Thai problem .
" Let Thai people reap what they sow"Especially in allowing all those whingers come to live here.Poor Thai's.

When is the Smart thai day arriving that thai beaches daily are clean in morning before beach goingers arrive?

BenPendejo | 23 March 2019 - 13:48:38

Phuket desperately needs a community clean-up program. Local people need to learn how to take pride in having clean streets, sidewalks and landscape. But I doubt it will happen. Locals seem to be too lazy and totally unconcerned about living among trash, which is one of the main things tourists comment about. There is an unacceptable attitude towards littering ingrained in society.

BenPendejo | 23 March 2019 - 13:43:15

10 clean-ups, during high season, then what?...back to doing nothing for the rest of the year? Try coming back in May, when 200 kilos of trash wash back on shore every day at every beach. Look at the areas away from the beach...THAT is what needs to be cleaned now before it washes out to the sea. The amount of litter strewn about Phuket on a daily basis is disgusting and unacceptable.

So they picked up 92.5 kilos of garbage and put it in about 100 large plastic bags....They also have large vinyl banners behind them bragging about how they are improving the environment. One step forward, two steps back.

and when they do clean up, the clowns still complain.

Is it not strange not keeping thai beaches daily clean, a normal thing, but just once in a while done by volunteers? Even mentioning how many kg was spread, is a thai news item. We don't read that in Smart 4.0 countries. Europe, Australia. New Zealand, Singapore, where governments clean beaches daily.

Kurt | 22 March 2019 - 15:28:36

In Europe, beaches daily cleaned by Orbor Tor's in evening/early morning. There enough trash containers in beaches. Where are they at thai beaches? That is what the tourist tax is for, right? All this 'volunteer' doings just happen when the thai beach dirt becomes to much. But than tourist iPhones shown it already in tourist home countries. Do they here understand that? Seems not.

christysweet | 22 March 2019 - 15:14:05

I no longer pick up trash- aside from what the wind blows onto my property from my pig neighbor. Let Thais reap what they sow in way of disgusting habits. It sure shows when there's no rain to make the grass grow to cover it all up.

christysweet | 22 March 2019 - 15:09:50

There is not one sq meter of the road behind the beach that is not encrusted with food and beverage containers. Look at the dump with pigs rooting about behind the restaurants just south of Laguna resorts - it\'s a Hanta breakout waiting to happen. C\'mon Thai people, stop the grotesque filthiness.

Rorri_2 | 22 March 2019 - 09:45:33

Probably done because of the "loss of face" when farangs do it.. without being asked.

Rorri_2 | 22 March 2019 - 09:44:13

"The cleanup was carried out under the “Protect Andaman” project, whereby the MNRE offices in each of five Andaman coast provinces – Phuket, Phang Nga, Ranong, Krabi and Trang – coordinate with local administrations to have 10 beach cleanups in each province," something done in many countries daily, here it is so rare it makes the news..amazing Thailand.
