Phuket water reservoirs enough to last 33 days

PHUKET: The last water remaining in the island’s three main reservoirs is enough to last 33 days, the Director of Phuket Provincial Irrigation Office (PPIO) has reported.

The news comes after a report by the PPIO on Wednesday (Apr 10) noted that the reservoirs had enough water for the island to last just 24 days – until about May 4.

Now, under the latest report, the reservoirs are expected to last until mid-May.

Somsawat Chaisinsod, Director of Phuket Provincial Irrigation Office, told The Phuket News yesterday (Apr 12) that the change in the predicted date until the reservoirs run dry was the result of using different methods to calculate how long the water would last.

He did not elaborate on what had changed – or will change in the coming weeks – that would see the water already in the reservoirs last longer.

However, he did say that he was not counting on rain.

Mr Somsawat explained that as of yesterday (Apr 12), the islands three main reservoirs contained 3.09 million cubic metres (m3) of usable water of their 21.72mn-plus m3 total capacity.

Bang Wad reservoir in Kathu – the island’s main water reserve – now contains just 1.10mn m3 of its 10.2mn-plus m3 capacity, he said.

“The Bang Neow Dum reservoir contains about 0.99mn m3 of water of its 7.2mn m3capacity, and the Khlong Kratha reservoir in Chalong currently contains about 1.00mn m3 of water of its 4.32mn m3 capacity,” he said.

“The water is enough to last 33 days.” he added.

However, on Wednesday (Apr 10), the PPIO reported that Bang Wad contained 1.05mn m3 of usable water, Bang Neow Dum contained about 1.03mn m3 of water, and Khlong Kratha contained about 1.01mn m3.

In that report the PPIO noted that the 3.09mn m3 of water was enough to last just 24 days.

“We used better calculations of the volume of water left in the reservoirs and the daily water usage rate to get a more accurate assessment of how much longer the water will last,” Mr Somsawat explained to The Phuket News yesterday.

Noting the slight increase in the reported water level at Bang Wad, Mr Somsawat said that the increase was not due to any water being fed into the reservoir, and that no rainfall had contributed ot the rise in the reported figure.

“This latest report today (Apr 12) is accurate. The water is enough to see us through for the next 33 days,” Mr Somsawat repeated.

However, his explanation comes as The Phuket News receives reports of residents in Kathu who are supplied by PWA not receiving any water supply for two weeks.

Mr Somsawat declined to reveal details of the water-management plan that was supposed to be announced April 1.

However, on Mar 26 Phuket Governor Phakaphong Tavipatana announced that water-management authorities on the island were to do their utmost to secure rights to use water from privately owned water reserves on the island. (See story here.)

“I will inform you when I have the water plan update,” Mr Somsawat said yesterday.

Meanwhile, Graisorn Mahamad, the Branch Manager of the Phuket office of the Provincial Waterworks Authority (PWA), told The Phuket News yesterday that he was in the process of having extra water to be provided from privately owned water source to feed the Bang Wad reservoir.

“We have already connected the pipes needed, and we just finished installing the water pump yesterday (Apr 11),” he said.

“This will add water from a private source to Bang Wad,” he added.

Better pray the Lord, that Phuket Authorities become active in securing water supply to the island. For those who already not have water supply and for the rest who are going to run out of water in 3 weeks time. But with praying the water tankers are not coming in. In 3 weeks time Phuket gets a anti tourist attraction. NO WATER.

DeKaaskopp | 15 April 2019 - 15:52:05

Dear Lord, please send rain or an armada of water tanker ships,so that this constant nerve wrecking moaning and groaning by someone can stop.

"What kind of plan can that be without water," the plans is the same as all "disasters" keep coming up with "plans" until it rains, or the smoke disappears, flooding disappears etc, then take credit for solving it.

Water shortage? why is private enterprise filling in a fresh water lake in Rawai that supplies a vast area of people with water; an ancient water supply. Greed perhaps or people with influence ? Why is this being allowed; what about the future supply of water in years to come ?

Kurt | 14 April 2019 - 11:47:22

Some parts of Phuket already without water supply for 2 weeks, so, the 4 weeks (?) water is just mend for a part of Phuket. Not for the whole of Phuket? What are the details 'water managementplan' of mr Somsawat he since 01 April declined to tell citizens of Phuket? Let me guess, it were just words. There is no plan at all. Constantly Phuket officials fall in their own 'word-swords'...

Kurt | 14 April 2019 - 10:07:52

If, in 4 weeks time, Phuket island has no water anymore what are the Governor, and the top brass of PPIO and PWA going to do? Resign? Retire? A advisory function in Prime Minister's office? Phuket is running dry fast now!

Kurt | 13 April 2019 - 19:55:57

A water plan update? What kind of plan can that be without water? Anyone any idea? This Phuket island management sucks. A lot of bla bla, but nothing makes sense. Not about water pollution, not about water supply, not about road safety, not about speed boat safety. And so on. Just 'framing' talks.

Fooling the public with the usual thai Official tiger paper office work tricks! Who believes that nonsense?Fact is: NOTHING so far is done to secure watersupply to Phuket island inhabitants! No water tanker ship deliveries. Phuket needs thousands of tons of water brought in! Which 4.0 Country would announce a 33 day water stock only and, ..further do nothing?
