Both the northbound and southbound lanes through the underpass will be closed – but only one lane closed at a time – while the work is being conducted, Phuket Highways Office Director Somwang Lohanut confirmed in a notice issued earlier this week.

The tunnel will be opened as soon as the work has been completed, Mr Somwang said.

“The work should be finished by about 3pm. I apologise for any inconvenience during this time,” he added.

So the underpass fills up with water every time it rains and the pumps short-out. Who had the bright idea that Phuket would be a great place to build an underpass? They should have noticed that it rains a lot here.

It seems that pump- and electrical systems are extremely vulnerable in new Phuket underpasses. About the pumps I understand, as the underpass roads are always very dirty ( small stones, plastic, etc. Pumps not like that). Clean the underpass roads at night twice a week. Pump problems over! Electrical? Inferior system? 'Short cuts' in electrical budget? All very promising for Chalong.

Again?! No more than amonth ago it was closed all day and caused chaos in both directions. And it wasn't helped by Central coning off the left-hand lane north-bound to make it easier for people to leave their precious (half empty) shopping mall. Good old Thailand.

@ BigA. Opening Promise Chalong Underpass in April 2019 will be 'dismissed on 01 April by singing: 01 April! Look at the very few number of workers during office hours. This Chalong underpass realisation have cost until now many businesses, reataurants, etc in Rawai, Naiharn, Kata a lot of money the last few years. But who in Phuket government care about local economics?

Seems Director Somwang still not realize that cleaning at night is much better for environment and traffic. He has not seen the traffic jams during previous day time cleanings? Why in other countries they clean underpasses and tunnels during night time. mr Somwang? By the way, after last time underpass cleaning the next day I could not see that cleaning took place.

Can't wait for our very own Underpass here in Chalong to open next april or was it the april after?
