The accident occurred at about 9:15am, causing massive traffic tailbacks southbound along one of the busiest roads on the island.

“The bus driver was driving too fast and collided into the back of a black van, which as a result hit the pickup truck in front of it,” Capt Jarat Lempan of the Wichit Police told The Phuket News today.

“Another pickup truck also hit the back of the bus,” he added.

“The vehicles in front of the bus had stopped because there was traffic in the underpass. Traffic in that area is normal in the mornings.” Col Jarat said.

“But the bus driver was reckless and drove too fast and did not stop in time,” he said.

“There were no serious injuries, only a woman in the black van directly in front of the bus sustained some minor injuries,” he added.

“The bus driver who was at fault has been charged with reckless driving,” Col Jarat confirmed.

Driving too fast, what in Phuket, never! The traffic police are always out catching speeding and dangerous driving! Hold on, no that's back home not here, sorry! lol Of course a 3 lane underpass is ideal, room for emergency services, but then when they cant enforce even a simple helmet law or ghost riding or riding on the pavement even in front of the police station, how do you think they will ever be able to enforce something that takes skill, just go to Chalong circle at 4pm to see how they control the traffic, it's embarrassing, no-coordination between any of them.

Yes, that Patong tunnel building will become a many years drama.
Many thai Phuket people anyway not like it to be build.

Phuket Officials are at fault not to have 3 lanes operational.
If they did there would have not been a pile-up!

And manage a Patong tunnel operational properly is impossible to expect, as Phuket officials not even able to manage a simple Darasamut 3 lane Underpass.
A 3 lane built underpass should be managed as a 3 lane underpass, right?
Otherwise they should have build it as a 2 lane. Logic and simple.
Perhaps they thought to become more able to desk manage ( not doing anything, just sitting on hands) by making it a 2 lane underpass and skip the operational center lane?
Who authorize/order that?
Creating a impossible dangerous situation on forehand during accidents/fire.
Are 3 Lanes to much to handle?
Hope the Governor looks now into this matter and order the use of 3 lanes flexible as it was ment to be with all the underpass ceiling directing lights.
Now it is not good.
They not even able to keep the underpass clean.

Pick up behind the bus was also driving reckless, otherwise it would not have bumped into the back of the bus.

The whole affair proofs wrong use of a underpass with 3 lanes.
Making it to use as a 2 lane underpass was stupid.
Look at the photos, a fine 3rd center lane blocked by concrete blocks, preventing even ambulances to reach a spot in the underpass when needed.
It is almost criminal, but here? Unneeded pile-ups.
A 3 lane underpass with the overhead traffic lights should be used flexible.
It should be used as a 2 way lanes at busy traffic direction and 1 lane at more quiet traffic direction.
This setting can be changed during the day, depend on traffic situation.
Overhead lights are giving that option. Of course, it needs monitoring the traffic, and pro active handling of thai officials.

Well, they not even keep that underpass clean.
Look at the water release holes, all blocked with plants and plastics/debris.
Look at the white/black striping, it is all grey of dirt.
Like in Singapore and other countries, each tunnel side should be cleaned 1x per 2 weeks, including the walls ( there are world wide machineries for that purpose)

But Darasamut Underpass never get any needed attention.
Officials just comforted themselves to skip the center lane ( saving them 'operational job thinking').
Just laziness, sabotaging optimal use of a 3 way underpass.

Smart E-City? A dream until today.

Question: why was this underpass 3 lane built, as with all the concrete blocks they made it operational a 2 lane underpass?
Why not built as a 2 lane underpass, like other underpasses?
It would have saved a lot of tax payers money, and of course a lot of commission money lesser too.

It is time that officials who are responsible for this underpass are called and explain themselves for disfunctional operational underpass handling.
Remember,.. the ceiling traffic lane lights for THREE lanes!
1 of the photos shows it in a comical way.
