The swim-run aquathlon race event will be held tomorrow (Saturday, June 8), from 8.30am until 12pm, at Thanyapuras’s world-standard 50-metre-pool and running track.
Earlier this week, a dress rehearsal was held at Thanyapura, with competitors testing out the course, and assimilating to the conditions.
A special edition of the daily Phuket News TV was filmed on site - watch footage of the training session at the end of the above video.
Competitors aged 6-8 years will race in a 50 metre swim and 500 metre race; ages 9 and 10 face a 100 metre swim and 1 kilometre race; ages 11-12, a 150 metre swim and a 1.5 kilometre run; ages 13-14, a 200 metre swim and a 2 kilometre run; and ages 15 and up, including adults, will compete in a three-stage race: a 1.5 kilometre run, a 400 metre swim, and another 1.5 kilometre run.
The full four-day Superkidz series features three more event days: a running race on Sunday, September 1; a duathlon race on Saturday, October 5; and a triathlon race on Saturday, March 8, 2014. Each of the events will be held at the Thanyapura Sports and Leisure Club, in Phuket’s Thalang district.
Athletes aged between 6 and 18 years, as well as adults, are welcome to compete in all the events.
The new multi-sport race series was developed from the experienced gained during the successful Iron Kids multi-sports events held at Thanyapura over the last two years.
The result is this year’s inaugural Thanyapura Superkidz Traithlon series, presented by Class Act Media – the parent company of The Phuket News.
The Superkidz series is dedicated to providing excitement and competition for young and adult athletes based in Asia, who love the sport of triathlon and have the heart to race and pursue achievements in sport.
The Superkidz series aquathlon, running, duathlon, and triathlon races will be an opportunity for international athletes to compete at a high level and for local athletes to develop the confidence to race and train internationally.
The new race series is dedicated to creating greater opportunities for local Thai and International youngsters to experience the amazing sport of triathlon and its related sports.
To that end, staff at Thanyapura staff have established a race fund for local Thai athletes who would like to race, but do not have enough financial support – known as the Superkids “+1” programme.
Each contribution to the fund will support two Thai athletes to compete in the series, and the Thanyapura staff have invited members of the public to contribute.
The climax of the series is the Superkidz Triathlon in March 2014, which will be an opportunity for children, teenagers and adults to prepare for later triathlons on the island: the Absolute ITU Phuket and Challenge Phuket races are being held only a few weeks apart in November.
