Officials are urging people not to use Khom Loy balloons close to the airport.

Officials are urging people not to use Khom Loy balloons close to the airport.

The warning came from Vice Governor Chokdee Armonwat who said, “We have ordered local district registrars to be strict when giving out permits or renewing licences for those importing or selling fireworks,

“All shops that stock fireworks should be checked, and all venues that are going to use fireworks during the festival should be checked for safety before Loy Kratong on Nov 25.

He stressed, “During the festival we want everybody to celebrate safely by avoiding the use of Khom Loy balloons, lasers or drones near the airport because it will affect the flights and the safety of the airport.

“The airport has very harsh penalties for those who do not follow the law. Selling alcohol is banned at the festival according to the 2008 Thailand Alcohol Law.”

V/Gov Chokdee added, “All agencies, local administrations and the private sector that sponsors or are involved in organising Loy Kratong festivities must be equipped with knowledge on safety standards and procedures for using fireworks, firecrackers and Khom Loys to prevent any accidents.

“During the festival, organisers must have emergency water rescue equipment nearby and must keep all areas clear and free of traffic congestion and never let it get to overcrowded.

“I invite all to come to enjoy the Loy Kratong Festival together. Please help us to promote and preserve this beautiful festival as one of the memorable images of Thai people,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, chief of the Phuket Provincial Police Col Teeraphol Thipjaroen told The Phuket News today (Nov19) that to keep peace and order during the festival police are trying to put a limit on area where people can use Khom Loys, fireworks, firecrackers to avoid any unwanted accidents.

“Some areas will be restricted from selling alcohol whilst others will not. If people have a licence to sell alcohol they will be allowed to do so according to thew law.”
