Phuket: Mascara and monsters

PHUKET: Phuket make-up artist and hairdresser Tassaneeya “Kate” Pumma has an interesting sideline hobby – she really, really likes using her make-up skills to resemble a zombie.

She is also rather partial to becoming a swan. For Kate though, she doesn’t necessarily see much difference, in this sense, between mascara and monsters when it comes to make up.

“I don’t like to copy other make-up artists. When I put make up on to become other things like zombies or black swans, I take inspiration from elements around me. I always do that when I apply make up.”

The Nakorn Pathom-native became interested in beauty when she was young. Both her mum and aunt were hairdressers, and from age seven, she became the family hairdresser assistant. It was only natural that Kate would end up in some sort of beauty-related job, and these days has her own beauty business based in Thalang.

“I like to see people look good,” says Kate.

Kate began her hairdressing career by working as a hairdresser assistant in various Bangkok salons.

She took an apprenticeship at famous hairdressing company Toni & Guy, which lasted two years.

“It was a tough time back then,” recounts Kate.

“It was extremely tough. I had to wear high heels standing all day long from 9am to 8pm straight for seven days. As the new girl, I was also the one who ran out to buy food at lunchtime or whenever.”

Kate also studied English everyday from 8-9pm.

Kate is positive about these times though and says that the challenges were a positive thing.

“Toni & Guy prepared me and gave me many great experiences. Working there taught me patience and perseverance, and taught me to be proud in what I do.”

During her training session with Toni & Guy, Kate also completed a three-month course at MAC Cosmetics where she learned about various facial treatments and ways of mixing colour.

She’s booked out most days but admits that the quantity of work is not as important as the quality.

As well as making her customers look good, she also has some advice to offer to the island’s beautiful ladies.

“Wear your sunscreen every time you go out – this is a must. Also use waterproof products if you want to go out with your make-up on. Unless, of course, you want to get that panda look,” she says with a laugh.

Kate also suggests that girls not blindly follow the new fashion fads and trends.

“Women have to consider the appropriate time and place to wear something. They should wear clothes that are suitable for their figures.

“You should try to understand the shade of your face and your face tone,” says Kate.

“I think to be a make-up artist is a very creative job, because you have to create a style and look that is suitable for the face, and sometimes try and find a new style that makes someone look better.”

Kate tips that the season will all be all about retro styling – retro clothes, retro attitude and, of course, retro make up. This is, like, totally in this season.

Here are Kate’s Top 10 beauty tips:

  1. Use a moisturiser that suits your skin type

  2. Use a base, because when foundation is used, it helps smooth the skin and helps your face look healthy and the cosmetics last longer

  3. For those who don’t like foundation, they should use BB cream – half base, half foundation. This makes your face looks good

  4. Use powder with foundation, as long as it is soft stuffed powder

  5. Eyebrows are important and must be styled in a good shape

  6. Always put on mascara

  7. Use a soft brush to make that healthy look

  8. Always use eyeliner

  9. Add lip gloss

  10. Use eyeshadow, a natural tone to give that earth-tone look and glow. Use a soft brown colour.
