Phuket Governor meets Chinese Vice Consul-General, ‘Phoenix’ salvage discussed

PHUKET: The Governor of Phuket on Monday (Oct 8) met with the Vice Consul-General of the Phuket Chinese Consular Office to discuss a number of topics including the raising of the ‘Phoenix’ tour boat which sank on July 5 killing 47 Chinese tourists.

The meeting was also a chance for Governor Phakaphong Tavipatana to congratulate Vice Consul-General Li Chunfu and the Chinese people on the National Day of the People’s Republic of China which fell on Oct 1.

Also in attendance at Monday’s meeting was Acting Director of the Phuket Marine Office Wiwat Chitchertwong, who was there to provide an update on the salvage operation to raise the Phoenix tour boat.

He said, ”The Phoenix tour boat disaster happened on July 5 killing 47 people. The contract to salvage the boat expired on Sept 22 and the salvage company have been being fined B9,430 per day since that date.

“I cannot confirm the date the boat will be salvaged as this depends weather and underwater conditions. But the operation will carry on as soon as possible."

He added, “After the boat has been raised, it will be taken to the Rattanachai shipyard to keep as an important piece of evidence into the disaster.

“I invite Li Chunfu to be an observer into the investigation to build confidence the confidence of the Chinese government again.”

Mr Li congratulated Gov Phakaphong on taking up hos new position as Phuket Governor on Oct 1 and added, “Phuket is a beautiful natural resources province which has great customs and culture similar to Chinese culture.

“So many Chinese tourists travel to Phuket to get a new experience and when they return they tell friends and family which leads to progress for the Phuket economy,” said Mr Li.

Lastly, Governor Phakaphong invited all Chinese-Thai and Chinese tourists to join the vegetarian festival being held from Oc t9-17 2018.
