PCG commits to Phuket’s cricket development

CRICKET: Over the past year, Phuket’s cricket community has primarily focused energies in revitalising the sport with new teams and playing formats, refurbishing the idyllic ACG Cricket and Sports Facility located in Thalang, and hosting an exciting range of events and activities that truly complement this island’s drive to become one of South East Asia’s most prominent and inviting destination sports locations.

Independently, cricket under the auspices of the Phuket Cricket Group (PCG) is a well-maintained organisation, but as with most non-profit entities any successful progress is underpinned by dedicated individuals and their willingness to work together in order to secure the future of their chosen sport or association, especially in Phuket where cricket is played by only a small minority of the general year-round population.

Last Tuesday (July 31), the PCG held its annual general meeting (AGM), where immediate plans for the forthcoming year’s cricket schedule were discussed, with several of those strategies now being implemented to assist and benefit players and the sport in general.

Foremost to last week’s AGM agenda was the proposal and election of new PCG committee members, whose key objectives are to promote and effectively communicate developmental approaches concerning cricket’s growth on Phuket and in Southern Thailand.

Leading the PCG in these efforts is newly elected chairman, Michael Flowers. Originating from New Zealand, Flowers – more recognised for shouting ‘fore’ on Laguna’s golf course than scoring fours at the ACG – is relatively new to the island’s cricket scene, becoming involved with Patong CC in 2017.

Gracious and agreeable in character combined with his constant involvement regardless of insult or injury on and off the playing field has found favour among his peers resulting in Flowers being unanimously voted into the chairman’s role . . . and is wished well by all in his endeavors this coming year.

Speaking just moments after his election to the post, Flowers paid respects to the outgoing chairman, Mark Whetton, and thanked the ACG’s owner and founder Alan Cooke MBE for his continued efforts.

“While I have only been involved with Phuket cricket for the past year, my childhood love of the game has been resurrected and I thoroughly enjoy the social aspect of the club, making many new friends both on Phuket and from international touring sides along the way.

“I am honored to now serve as Chairman of the PCG and look forward to welcoming new players and supporters of cricket to our community and hope many more people get to experience the good times I have been able to enjoy since discovering the ACG.”

As general manager of the ACG, Jason Robertson continues to invest an unenviable amount of time – when not outsourcing suitable grape juice retailing venues – in promoting the ground for a range of sports, but has further established himself as the second hardest worker for cricket by taking on the role of PCG’s General Members representative.

With his dual role in mind, Robertson commented, “I am excited about the prospects for the new PCG committee. Bringing enthusiastic new blood, with fresh ideas and exciting plans for the future. We can see only promising times ahead for cricket here in the Region. Cricket is just one of the arrows in the ACG’s bow, with Touch Rugby also introducing an organising committee and a new league on the way. All very thrilling for the ACG and sports on Phuket.”

Elected to arguably a most ironic of positions, Anthony Van Blerk as Club Affairs representative and one of the longest serving PCG committee members remarked on this newly generated enthusiasm for the Phuket’s cricket development.

“Cricket has been well organised on the Island for many years now, while this term we plan to take it to another level by pushing our premier league to become more competitive with higher quality cricket, and at the same time plan on creating a social league for those who don’t want to take it as seriously which will also help introducing newcomers to the game.”

And so a new generation of cricketers take to the helm of the PCG and with them comes an air of enthusiasm that will focus simply on breathing a new life and energy into cricket here on Phuket.
