Patong police urge water-delivery trucks to avoid Patong Hill for Songkran

The request was announced in a notice issued by Lt Col Lert Porkwang, Head of Traffic Police at Patong Police Station.

The request asked water-truck drivers to refrain from using Phrabaramee Rd (Route 4029) to cross Patong Hill to deliver water into the tourism town from 6am to midnight.

“The first day of the Songkran festival is April 13. There will be a lot of people driving in Patong, including many big bikes (for Phuket Bike Week, see here) on that day,” Col Lert told The Phuket News.

“There will be a lot of water across the road, which will make the road dangerous for drivers,” he said.

No other large vehicles were urged to not cross Patong Hill on the day.

“There is no request for other big vehicles to not go over Patong Hill this Saturday, but for water trucks it is necessary,” Col Lert said.

Col Lert noted, “We do not have the legal authority to specifically ban water trucks from crossing the hill by law, so this is a request only.”

However, he warned, “But if a water truck is in an accident or harms any people, the driver will be charged.”

Urge, urge, urge. Not enforce, enforce, enforce. Happy along the roads checking point 'tent sitting' during Songkran.

'Urge' water trucks not to go over the hill, 'urge' tuk tuk drivers not to attempt to maim tourists, 'urge' people to wear helmets, etc. Good luck with that.

I guess there is no problem with water there any other time.

"We do not have the legal authority to specifically ban water trucks from crossing the hill by law.."?

Several years ago anything larger than a mini-bus was legally banned from crossing the hill by that road before 7pm each night. The law was intended to reign in the tour buses but also applied to cement mixers and water trucks and was never revoked.

This is testimony to the fact that water trucks and the fools that drive them are known to be more dangerous than the other trucks and buses and vans driven by complete fools. In any case...this statement or "request" is a waste of time, as anyone driving any vehicles will do whatever they damn well please, any time.

Well, the Patong Hill Road tarmac is so much saturated with oil and rubber last few months ( see how shiny the road is), that it just needs rain to make the 'Hill' very dangerous during first few hours rainfall for all traffic! The excuses by than that the road was slippery are valid! Anyway, have your dash cam working during Songkran if you must drive.

A request only can not result in a 'automatic' charge of water truck driver if the driver is not at fault during a road accident. Other drivers can be at 'fault', ( drugs/drunk, car not in good driving condition,etc.). Sometimes I have doubts about law skill/knowledge of high ranking RTP officers. They not make the laws, they have to enforce them 'only'. Already difficult...
