Navy tasked with ensuring marine tour boat safety in Phuket

PHUKET: Following the Phoenix tour boat disaster, Vice Admiral Somnuk Preampramot, Commander of the Royal Thai Navy Third Area Command based at Cape Panwa on Phuket’s east coast, has been ordered to set guidelines for “controlling and supervising” tour boats operating in the Phuket area.

V/Adm Somnuk held a meeting today of leading officials from government agencies involved in marine tourism transport to ensure and expedite compliance with marine safety regulations.

V/Adm Somnuk said the order followed Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha visiting Phuket in person on Monday (July 9) in response to the Phoenix disaster.

The purpose of the meeting is to integrate action by agencies and to improve coordination among agencies to not allow.another such incident to occur, R/Adm Somnuk said.

“This is the southwest monsoon. The weather in the area is quite intense. If there is no control and supervision, another occurrence is possible,” he said.

Maritime rules and safety are not followed or enforced because tea money is paid. Nothing will improve until honest people do their jobs correctly. It's time to put corrupt officials, police, hiso, mafia, and long time crooks in jail to cut out the root of the problems, rather than continue putting lipstick on the corrupt pigs.

Safety regulations, there's lots, just nobody bothers with them or enforces them until it's too late, bolting the gate after the horse has gone springs to mind!

Indeed, there was and is no maritime control and supervision about marine tourism transport. Can the R/Adm explain why not?
Or perhaps Phuket Marine Office breaks silence and say something?
What are the actual marine safety regulations? Please, explain.

Great, the Navy is gathering all the incompetent government offices and officials that were responsible for creating a climate of non-compliance, corruption and and dis-concern in the first place. Many of these offices and the worthless chaps that are employed there should have been sacked. I really don't think the expertise exists within any of those agencies, especially the Marine Office.
