Navy says closed road to Phuket beach is on public land

PHUKET: The Royal Thai Navy officer involved in the investigation into a company closing a road leading to Laem Nga Beach in Rassada says that government records show that the road was built on public land.

Lt Sompop Kamkhana from the Navy’s Third Area Command at Cape Panwa told The Phuket News today (April 4), “The Department of Rural Roads confirmed they built the road in 1994 and handed it over to Rassada Municipality to take care of in 1997.

“According to the law, regardless of the time that has passed, the road remains a public road,” he said.

The road was opened on March 29 after joined Phuket Vice Governor Khajornkiet Rakpanichmanee and Phuket Damrongdhama Centre (Ombudsman’s Office) Chief Prapan Kanprasang inspected the site and held talks with Laem Nga Development Co Ltd’s legal representative.

Military personnel armed with assault rifles accompanied the officials for the “talks”. (See story here.)

However, the company blocked off the road again soon after the official inspection party had departed.

“We visited the area again (on Mar 31) after learning that they had blocked off the road again,” Lt Sompop said.

“We told them to keep the road open and will have a meeting with officials and the company soon to settle this,” he added.

Military now has powers of arrest and infinite detainment. Why aren't they acting here? Whatever could it be? mmmm. Gosh...I just don't know.

That company must be very 'Influential', that they just closed the road again the moment the vice governor, the ombudsman representative, chief Prapan and Lt Sompop left.

A company that thinks the thai laws are not for them.
Stronger law enforcement is needed, arrest such people, lock them up a few days and then ask them or they are 'willing' to understand/obey the given legal ...
