Scrum half Sirinat “Mai” Suksawat and hooker Natthanan “Sa Tang” Nanachivakul are members of the Phuket Lomas Under 13s squad, and were selected to attend the St Pius X rugby camp in Sydney.

As well the rugby training – which included coaching from former Waratah’s winger Francis Cullimore – the Phuket boys visited an aquarium, the Sydney Opera House and Taronga Zoo, before taking in a rugby match as spectators at the ANZAC day game between Sydney Roosters and St George Dragons.

Training camp director Mike Penistone said the two Phuket Lomas boys had excelled in training with the Under 12s, culminating in a game where the boys scored a try apiece. The boys also made some new friends, even though they cant speak English.

In their second day of training they moved up to the U13,14 & 15 level and the Phuket pair were a little nervous being with older and bigger boys. But they settled down and the coaches were impressed how quick they were to pick things up.

Phuket Lomas organiser Pat Cotter said the coaching on the trip was first rate and there was no doubt the boys have learned a great deal – even if they don’t know it yet.

“The boys conducted themselves very well both on and off the field and can be proud of the way they have reacted to a completely alien environment,” Mr Cotter said.
