The arrest was made after the video clips started to circulate on social media.

Patong Police Chief Col Tassanai Orarigadech told The Phuket News today (Sept 1), “Yesterday I ordered a team of investigators to look for this tuk-tuk driver urgently.

“An officer found the driver at 10 pm, his name is Mr Pannawich Nakamin, 35, and he admitted that he is a man seen in the video.”

According to Col Tassanai, Pannawich told police that he picked up tourists at McDonald's on Thaweewong Rd at 5am yesterday morning and dropped them off at a hotel on Soi Kebsup where they refused to pay the B400 fare so he went and got the knife from his vehicle and started threatening them.

“This behaviour is not acceptable in a public place. People should not be carrying a knife in tourism areas,” said Col Tassanai.

“I am still looking for the tourists involved as I want to hear their side of the story,” he added.

At present, Pannawich has only been charged with carrying a weapon in a public place for which he was fined B500.

“Other charges might be brought against him if we find out more details about this case,” Col Tassanai concluded.

Tuk tuk drivers regularly assault or threaten tourists, but much of it goes unreported to the Police or media.

A fruit vendor with her stand in front of her home, halfway on the sidewalk hit me with a plank of wood for parking in front of it, on the public street. Her fine - 500 baht.

Rather amusingly I was fined 1,000 baht this week for what I can only understand was "parking near a bridge" outside the Honda motorbike shop in Patong whilst having bite to eat in Malin Plaza. Maybe I should have run around with a large knife threatening people instead, would have been cheaper! Also would have avoided the food poisoning I got the next morning. 555.

Many tuk-tuk drivers carry weapons, it's nothing unusual. BUT if the police are serious about containing this problem they should do continuous random searches of drivers' cabs & confiscate weapons. Pull them over, arrest them.

Amazing, normally during photo sessions there are 4-7 police officers on the photo with the criminal.
Moment of fame of the day!
But here the poor tuk tuk driver sits lonely. Not fair!

Ok, not joking, it shows the RTP stand when it comes to tuk tuk drivers, right?
Police don't want to be involved, unless they have to, forced by social media.

This affair needs a Governor inspection, of course, after the Governor inspected the crocodile they got, as mentioned here in PN.

Fistly don't block the scumbags face out as he should be publicly shamed, secondly it really doesn't matter what the other side of the story is the fact he threatened anyone with a knife over $20 is a disgrace (animal), thirdly a 500 baht fine is an insult to all law abiding citizens, police wouldn't have even pursued the case if there wasn't social media attention, the attitude of...

Why is his face blurred out in the picture? He's an adult who has been charged with a crime, his face should be shown.

If I was caught on video threatening people with a knife my face would be on the front page of every newspaper in the country. But then I'm not protected by my status as a Patong taxi driver.
