Where can I go?
There are three main healthcare options available in Phuket. The first is a private clinic. These are usually much cheaper, but are suitable only for minor ailments. The second is a government hospital, and the third is a private hospital.
Government vs private?
Like most countries around the world, if you’ve got money to burn, or good insurance, probably stick to the private. That’s not to say the government system is necessarily bad, and some doctors will even work in both. You may be better going to a large government hospital like Vachira, Phuket Town, for serious injuries rather than smaller private ones like Patong Hospital. At the end of the day though, private ones are usually more geared towards treating foreigners, eliminating potentially dangerous language barriers, and will usually offer better facilities.
How much will it cost?
It ranges significantly, depending on where you go, and obviously what treatment you get. A consultation at a clinic can start from just B100, but you may find yourself parting with more than B3,000 just to sit in the same room as a doctor at Bangkok Hospital.
What about the quality of care?
Many newcomers to Thailand often cite this as a cause of concern. They needn’t. While the standard of public healthcare and private clinics can vary, the standard of private health facilities is first-class, and can compete with most Western counterparts.
What do I do in an emergency?
There is no centralised ambulance service in Phuket. If you are involved in or witness an accident, you can contact an individual hospital directly, or notify the Kusoldharm or tourist police who can then make arrangements for you. It can also be worth keeping the number of you embassy handy in case there are any major problems.
