Health Matters: Why diets are tricky

It is argued that the modern world today presents an unrealistic idea of beauty. The kinds of women you see in magazines, TV shows are usually slim petite girls. However, many famous models are actually in fact underweight.

Of course, some women are naturally quite thin but there are also many who suffer from anorexia. For example, according to the Renfrew Centre Foundation for Eating Disorders, in the USA up to 24 million people of all ages and genders suffer from an eating disorder (anorexia, bulimia and binge eating disorder).

It’s quite easy for a woman to feel uneasy and anxious about her figure when comparing it to say, a cover of a Cosmopolitan magazine. Some scientists argue that a person’s body image and self-esteem can dramatically decrease after looking at various photos in magazines.

The beauty of Renaissance marble sculptures, the curvy shape of Marilyn Monroe and various other pin-up models, evidentially are far from being a bag of bones. Some argue that if they are not remotely close to the ‘ideal’ figure represented in the media, they develop bad body thoughts.

It is not uncommon to test out the most popular diets going around, and no one is denying that many of them actually have an effect. Whether you cut carbs, meat or all you do is eat dark chocolate, you will probably lose several kilos. However, the question is: why do the kilos keep returning? And why do we gain even more weight after?

Any diet has the potential to cause problems, see below for the following reasons:

We try to solve problems which a diet is simply unable to solve. For example, self-esteem. I might believe that I will suddenly be more attractive and confident when I lose weight. But in fact, self-esteem is not just about the number you see on the scale. You won’t necessarily be more confident, especially if your job requires more creativity or knowledge than you already have.

We resort to eating when we feel anxious, upset, angry, bored or tired. We eat when we actually want to drink or sleep. All of these facts coincide with an eating disorder, because they link to binge-eating, compulsive-eating and many other problems. Every second girl in a metropolitan city has some sort of eating disorder. Whether it’s their determination to go to the gym five times a week, or completely starve themself – these are not stable actions. Plus, they could easily lose motivation.

When we don’t give our bodies enough nutrition, our metabolism slows down and we don’t digest properly. Our body turns to safety mode and stores all nutrients in case of complete starvation. By the time we start to eat properly, the body tries to store everything in case it happens again. So, we can get even bigger than we were.

Inner beauty comes from living in harmony and being content with your body, don’t overeat but don’t starve yourself either. You should eat just enough that satisfies you and also remember to enjoy eating!

At Santosa Detox Centre we educate people how to detox. The main goal is to re-establish the connection you have with yourself, heal physically and emotionally. We recommend detox as a way of cleansing the body, not for losing weight. It is a way of taking care of the body on a regular basis, just as you would schedule to maintenance your car.

After the fast you will feel more connected to nature, your sense of taste will be sharp, and you will understand the true needs of your body better.
