Exclusive: Phuket peels back the success of Thai pop rock band Potato

The melodic sounds of Thai pop rock band Potato have been gracing music channels across the Kingdom for over a decade. In fact, since their 2001 debut album, the band has steadily become one of the most loved in Thai pop rock, right up there with the likes of Clash, Big Ass and Bodyslam.

The band’s strong following among Thai millenials is a testament to their songwriting and ability to create rock ballads that also “kick out the jams” when needed. Interestingly, the band first came together during a commercial shoot for a Coca-Cola advert back in 2001. The boys of Potato took time out of their busy schedule to speak to The Phuket News about what makes them tick.

Could you describe the band’s music style and influence?

Positive, Happy and Funny. We are also mainly inspired by our families and the people around us.

How has your music evolved since you first began playing music together?

It has evolved exponentially, as each member has brought something new and fresh to the table each time, helping to shape our perception and attitudes towards music.

What has been your biggest challenge as a band? Have you been able to overcome that challenge?

Laguna Golf Phuket

Finding ways to keep “Potato” has been one of our greatest challenges so far. However, as we have always been all about the sound, we hope to keep on improving and growing with an everchanging music and attitude.

What advice do you have for kids (and big kids) who want to form their own bands?

Always take good care of what you love and what you love to do. Music needs learning and developing. So be happy and put your heart into the music so that you can share your feelings with the audience.

What are your future goals/dreams for the band going forward?

We hope to keep performing for our fans and playing music for as long as we possibly can. Maybe we’ll come to play in Phuket soon!
