Chinese tourist rescued from surf by Patong lifeguards

PHUKET: Lifeguards at Patong Beach have repeated their warning for swimmers to obey the red “No Swimming” flags posted along the beach marking where it is dangerous to enter the surf after a Chinese tourist was rescued yesterday (Aug 12).

Lifeguards reported that a Chinese tourist entered the water at a section Patong Beach where red flags had been posted at about 10:20am – after he had already been warned by lifeguards that it was dangerous to swim in that area.

The tourist, who lifeguards did not name, was soon in serious difficulty as he was being dragged away from shore by a rip.

Lifeguards quickly responded and brought the tourist safely back to shore, now exhausted from his struggle against the rip.

“He was tired and hard difficulty breathing. Lifeguards administered first-aid before he was taken to Patong Hospital. Now he's safe under the care of doctors,” lifeguards noted in their report.

Mr ematt, it's very simple, they weren't in the water to rescue him, until after he got intop difficulty, there were NOT a lot of people, on the beach, the lifeguards should have been ready... this is not hard, for most people, to understand. geez.

ematt | 16 August 2019 - 19:08:34

R2, how do you know what the life guards did and did not do? Were you there? Jeesh...,.

Rorri_2 | 14 August 2019 - 13:48:16

Pascale...the "lifeguards" did as they are supposed to do, and are paid to do, they should have also noticed him being caught in the rid, and responded immediately... experienced lifeguards know where rips are, they are easy to spot, as soon a swimmer enters a rid, lifeguards take action... NOT stand by.

Perhaps warned tourists who ignore red flags and verbal warnings of Life Guards not to go into the water should be charged a certain tariff when they ignore signs/warnings and need to be rescued. (?) A rescue fee in such case is reasonable. It sounds probably strange, but why not a fresh/new approach in this? Having your life saved for, say 10,000 thb, is not to much. Just a idea.

Hypocrisy is complaining consistently about opinions generalizing a characteristic of a nationality while doing the exact same to other peoples. And showing a lack of discourse skills in over reliance on insults is so weak. Is this TeakDoor Sexpat forum or TPN's reader comment section?

I'll say it again, remove the lifeguards that present an illusion of safety, post signs stating Beach Closed - Swim at Own Risk and drownings will decrease.

If he was already warned he should have been fed to the sharks, why waste time and money rescuing an oxygen thief

BenPendejo | 13 August 2019 - 19:14:19

Well...red flags aren't intended to minimize the need for lifeguards. In this case, evidently the lifeguards warned him, and the fool is lucky he didn't drown. That said, red flags have taken the role of primary excuse to blame people for drowning..."he didn't pay attention to flag, so his fault". A lifeguard should never just say "oh well, we warned you" and walk...

"after he had already be warned by LG's" 2 days ago i mentioned the well known stubbornness of Chinese when it comes to following advices. And here we go again.Wondering what kind of criticism 'Blondie Bondi"has this time regarding the lifeguards.

If they want to ignore the lifeguards leave them be- they are just putting othr lives at risk. The other day there were red flags flying in Kamala with a very heavy surf and at least 30 people in the water.
