Phuket Sport: BIS swim team hosts all-Asia tournament

SWIMMING: About 500 competitive swimmers from around Asia will meet at British International School in Phuket this weekend for the Flying Fish Swim Club Invitational Swim Meet.

“The BIS community is really looking forward to some fantastic competition and a weekend of great racing” said Helen Sweeney, head coach of the Flying Fish swim team.

Twenty-two swim teams from across Asia are competing at the event, being held at BIS on Saturday, May 4 and Sunday, May 5.

The BIS team comprises 99 students, with other teams visiting from Malaysia, China, Indonesia, Vietnam, Singapore, Philippines and other parts of Thailand.

Zsuzsanna Jakabos, a three time Olympian from the Hungarian national swim team, is currently training at BIS and will be participating in the tournament as an exhibition swimmer in the ‘18 Years and Over Boys’ races.

Spectators are welcome to attend the competitions, which begin at 8am on on Saturday (May 4) with a parade and opening ceremony, followed by the races starting at 8.30am.

The BIS Flying Fish team has been preparing for their home tournament with recent competitive successes against a visiting Singapore swim team in March and at the Singapore Nationals later in the same month, while Flying Fish member and BIS student Andrew Heinz participated in the Thai National Youth Games in Maha Sarakam.
